Carnaval - Entertainment Tilcara - Argentina

Each February, Tilcara celebrates its Carnaval. The nine-day festival begins with the Desentierro del Carnaval, during which a small devil figure is unearthed by masked revelers. Cigarettes and alcohol are spilled on the ground to ensure a good harvest. The typically shy northeast Argentines cut loose during Carnaval, drinking copious amounts of wine and a mix of fernet and coke; they light firecrackers, throw chalk dust, and spray water and foam day and night. The streets fill with dancers and partiers whol follow bands all over town. Tilcara's Carnaval is a good time to see traditional dances and to sample regional dishes such as empanadas, choclo and queso de cabra. The festivities end with the Carnaval Chico and the devil is buried until the following year.
