Salta ‚Äúthe beautiful‚ÄĚ is an attractive city that is currently experiencing a tourism boom. ÔŅĹThe Argentine northwest is a popular visitor destination, and the colonial Salta is the perfect place to visit it from.ÔŅĹ Founded in 1582, Salta retains much of its colonial architecture and has the best tourism infrastructure (hotels, travel agencies, etc.) in the region.

Salta's heritage is varied: ancient Calchaqui and Inca vestiges can be visited, and the legacy of the spanish colonization and of the independence wars are still present in the architecture of Salta itself and in its surroundings.

It is in 1000BC that the first primitive farmers settled in the region (Calchaquis). In the 15th century, the Inca took over the place. A century later, the spanish colonized the region and provoked a mix of cultures. Salta, however, stayed very linked to other cities such as Potosi, Lima, La Paz or Sucre. This link can still be seen today in architecture, dishes, tradition, churches etc.

Several Inca trails can be followed in and outside the city, notably through the Calchaqui valley and la Puna. Some villages on the outskirt of town are worth visiting too: San Lorenzo, Vaqueros, La Caldera and Campo Quijano.

In 1999, one of the highest Inca sanctuary was found on the mount Llullaillaco. It is now tranformed in a museum, where visitors can learn more about the Inca culture: the High Mountain Archaelogical Museum.

Several circuits will take you through the varied natural environment surrounding Salta: lagoons, volcanoes, vineyards, mountains and more.
