The English-speaking staff at the provincial tourism office, SecretarÃa de Turismo de Salta, has lots of information on both the province and city (daily 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Buenos Aires 93, Tel: 431-0950/ 0640, Fax: 431-0716, E-mail: tursalta@salnet.com.ar, URL: www.turismosalta.com). It has a branch office at the teleférico station, just near the bus terminal (daily 10 a.m.-7 p.m. San MartÃn and Yrigoyen). Another place to stop for information is the municipal tourism office (Caseros 711, Tel: 437-3340, E-mail: turismo@municipalidad-salta.gov.ar, URL: turismo.municipalidad-salta.gov.ar). Other useful websites are: www.redsalta.com and www.turismoensalta.com. The national park service has two offices in Salta: one for Parque Nacional Copo (Santa Fe 23, Tel: 431-0255, E-mail: parques@ciunsa.edu.ar) and the other for El Rey and Baritú national parks (España 366, piso 3, Tel: 431-2683). Other important agencies are Policia TurÃstica (Mitre 23, Tel: 421-2791), GendarmerÃa Nacional (Los Alamos s/n, Tel: 439-0100) and Dirección Nacional de Migraciones (Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Maipú 35, Tel: 4220438). Money
Most banks' hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-2 p.m. All have 24-hour ATMs. On España, between Plaza 9 de Julio and Balcarce are Banco Francés / BBVA, HSBC, Citi and other banks. Citi (España and Balcarce) changes US dollars, Euros and travelers checks (American Express, Citibank, in US dollars or Euros) for international clients. Also on this block are casas de cambio Dinar (Monday-Friday 9 a.m.,-1:30 p.m., 5-8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Mitre 101; US dollars, Euros, and Chilean, Bolivian and Brazilian currencies; US dollar American Express travelers checks) and Masventas (Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. España 610; US dollars, Euros, and Chilean and Brazilian currencies; US dollar, Euro American Express travelers checks, poor rates). The rate for Chilean pesos is poor in Salta. Banco de la Nación exchanges US dollars, Euros and American Express travelers checks, and is a Western Union agent (Mitre 151, and Belgrano). Moneygram wires may be picked up at Banci Itaú (Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Mitre 270).
Keeping in Touch
The post office is two blocks from Plaza 9 de Julio (Monday-Friday 8 a.m-1 p.m., 5-8 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Deán Funes 160). Take any package weighing over 50 grams (1.75 oz) to Aduanas (Monday-Friday 8:30-11 a.m. España 394, piso 2). Telecom centers are located throughout downtown; many have both phone and internet services. Internet costs $0.80-1.60 per hour; Skype is common.
Medical
The main public health facilities are Hospital San Bernardo (Dr. Mariano Boedo 69, Tel: 432-0300) and Hospital Materno Infantil (children's hospital) (Av Sarmiento 625, Tel: 421-3701). Pharmacies are easy to find, especially along La Florida. They follow the de turno system. Farmacia Catedral has 24-hour service and delivers (Caseros 745, Tel: 431-6209 / 431-5978).
