Mercado Artesanal - Market San Fernando Del Valle De Catamarca - Argentina

Craftspeople from all over Catamarca meet at the capital’s Mercado Artesanal. On display are their ceramics, woodcarving and rhodocrosite jewelry, as well as the famous ponchos and other weavings. The creation of Catamarca’s most famous product may be seen at the Fábrica de Alfombras behind the showroom (Monday-Friday 7 a.m.-12:30 p.m.), Here, women knot the world-renowned, high-quality rugs. Visitors may watch designs come to life under quick fingers. The older women, who sit in one corner preparing skeins, happily explain the process (Spanish only). Customers may purchase one of the ready-made rugs, or special order one.
