Amaicha Del Valle - Other Activity Tafí Del Valle - Argentina

Amaicha del Valle is a small, indigenous Diaguita village in a cactus-strewn desert with a wealth of attractions within a 20 kilometer (12-mi) radius. The most famous archaeological site is Quilmes (18 km / 11.2 mi north). On the road east to Los Zazos are El Remate (9 km / 5.6 mi) and Pucará Los Cardones (12 km / 7.5 mi). Tiupunco is a petrified forest in the midst of the desert (20 km / 12.4 mi north).



Museo Runa Huasi has a small collection of historical artifacts (San Martín and Aroaz). Fundación Amauta Escuela Cultural teaches the region’s history from the Diaguita point of view (4 km / 2.4 mi, Los Zazos road). Museo de la Pachamama is artist Héctor Cruz´ homage to Mother Earth (Ruta Provincial 307, Km 118, Tel: 03892-42-1004, E-mail: info@museopachamama.com, URL: www.museopachamama.com).



End the day by stargazing at Observatorio Astronómico Ampimpa, which has nightly programs (Ruta 307, Km 107, Tel: 0381-156-092-286, E-mail: observatorioampimpa@astrotuc.com.ar, URL: www.astrotuc.com.ar).

Getting There

Buses depart from the Aconquija office (1 block east of main plaza, then half block north, URL: www.transporteaconquija.com.ar) for Tafí del Valle and Tucumán (1.5 hr / 4 hr, $6 / $13) and Cafayate (2-2.5 hr, $16).

Travel Tips:

Amaicha has all services (ATM at gas station on Ruta 307). Hotels and campgrounds are much cheaper than in Tafí. Sumajpacha Ecoturismo dispenses excellent tourism information and map (free), and does a variety of tours (Padilla s/n, Amaicha, Tel: 03892-42-1433, E-mail: sebapastrana@hotmail.com, URL: www.sumajpacha.com / www.comunidadamaicha.org.ar).
