Valles Calchaquíes

South of Salta is Valles Calchaquíes, a series of valleys gouged with gorges of multi-colored stone and spread with fertile plains perfect for vineyards. Ruta Provincial 33 defines the triangular area’s northern edge, where Parque Nacional Los Cardones is. The west side is defined by Ruta Nacional 40, which passes the village of Cachí, before slicing through Quebrada de las Flechas. Along the valley’s eastern edge is Ruta Nacional 68, which twists through Quebrada de las Conchas before meeting Ruta 40 at Cafayate. Valles Calchaquíes owes its name to the indigenous nation that has lived there since pre-Hispanic times.
