Transportation

By Caroline Bennett

Direct buses leave from Buenos Aires’ Retiro Station for the overnight trip to Bariloche seven times per day (22 hours). Alternatively Aerolineas Argentina and LAN offer several flights per day (2 hours) from the capital during the high season, and 5 weekly flights during the low season.

The regional airport lies 14 km outside of the city center. A shuttle to town costs about US $5, or you can try to track down bus #72, though its schedule seems a bit sporadic.

Buses from Bariloche to other local and national cities leave from the main bus terminal 3 km east of the city, next to the train station on Avenida 12 de Octubre (RN-237), easily accessible to/from the center by buses #10, #20 and #21 (every 10-15 minutes, $1). A cab to the center costs around $6.

Buses leave for San Martin de Los Andes (twice daily, 6 hrs); Junin de los Andes (daily, 4hrs); Villa La Angustura (3 daily, 1 hr); Villa Traful (daily, 2 hrs); Neuquén (12 daily, 6 hrs); Salta (2 daily, 39 hrs); El Bolson (14 daily, 2hrs); Esquel (6 daily, 4 ½ hrs); Epuyén (5-6 weekly, 3 hrs); Córdoba (2 daily, 22 hrs); Mendoza (daily, 19 hrs); and Buenos Aires (7 daily, 23 hrs). Buses leave for various other local and national destinations and schedules change with the seasons, be sure to check at the station for the most up-to-date information.
