By Caroline Bennett

Aside from the typical tourist hassle or mishap, Bariloche is a very safe town where locals are friendly, hitchhiking is common and you’re more likely to run into trouble with unpredictable weather and nature than crime. Be careful waking along the windy Avenida Bustillo, as cars tend to drive fast and can’t always see around corners. Also be sure to check the weather and with the Club Andino Bariloche (located on 20 de Febrero 30, phone 02944-527966) before heading out into the mountains without a guide, as conditions can change quickly.
