Hiking

By Caroline Bennett

Cerro Tronodor is the highest peak in Nahuel Huapi National Park. It is named for the powerful avalanches that blast down the slopes and are loud enough to hear thundering from miles away. The three jagged peaks (“The Argentine,” “The Chilean” and “The International”) provide excellent and moderately challenging hikes for experienced climbers. Non-climbers can enjoy the sight of the cerro and view the glaciers by heading into the park via a dirt road that leads from RN-258 heading south from Bariloche. After entering the park, follow the road that forks north toward Pampa Linda, which provides highly impressive views of the cerro.

Tours that take you through the park and past Pampa Linda can be arranged from Bariloche (basic tour around $35) Some offer combining the trip with hiking in the park and/or boating excursions on Lago Mascardi.
