La Trochita, a steam train running on a narrow rail system, is a legendary piece of Patagonian history. Its arrival to the isolated landscape in the early 1920s was the beginning of settlement of the region. It was built by the Croatians, Russians, Polish and Italians who later became the founding settlers of El Bolsón. Today the train is a living museum that makes a three and a half hour journey between Esquel and El Bolsón twice a week. The train passes through some of Patagonia’s most memorable natural passageways.
