Refugio Piltriquitrón and the Carved Forest

Cerro Piltriquitrón’s steep mountain face rises from the edge of El Bolsón, creating an awe-inspiring vista. The mountain’s name means "the gathering of clouds" in Mapuche, an appropriate name since it is the only place in the entire area that gathers condensation. Several aspects make a visit to the peak worthwhile. First, the trailhead is also the site for some of the best paragliding in the region. Second, there is a unique carved forest about twenty minutes into the walk. Locals used trees that were destroyed in a 1998 forest fire to carve statues resembling everything from giant insects to intertwined lovers. A third reason to make the hour-plus walk up the steep trail is the magnificent view found from the operating hut, not to mention the world-class, freshly brewed, snow melt beer they offer at certain times of year. There is fabulous backcountry skiing beyond the refuge for snow adventurers.
