The Llao Llao Hotel's history resembles a Cinderella fairytale. Her royalty status, despite lofty beginnings, was shadowed and abused by people of power, until finally the day came that she was treated with the respect she deserved.
The Llao Llao Hotel was originally built in 1938. Hand crafted by architect Alejandro Bustillo, the hotel was a masterpiece of log and design construction. The Cypress logs, granite stone walls and larch roof tiles were an exceptional piece of craftsmanship, even by today's standards. But sadly, it was taken away a short year later by a ravaging fire. Bustillo pushed forward and had a replica built that opened December 1940. The accommodations were a huge fanfare and attracted the elite. Aristocrats, foreign government officials, diplomats, actors as well as other lofty socialites flocked to the hotel to splurge, play, and enjoy the magnificent views. The party can to a screeching halt in 1978 when the resort was closed down during the reign of the military junta. Windows were boarded up and a reputation grew among neighborhood children that the immense building was a haunted house. The property's lone caretaker tried to keep up with the 37 acres of land but ended up only adding to the spooky atmosphere of the forgotten hotel. Fifteen years later the resort had a re-awakening and opened July 3, 1993, as the Llao Llao Hotel and Resort you know today.
