The Arrayan Tree

Chilean and Argentine northern Patagonia have something in common. They are the only place in the world that is home to the unique and special Arrayan tree. The Arrayan is a plant with a list of special qualities other than its choice of origin. The bark is smooth, and a swirling mix of cinnamon and white. The satiny texture of the trunk remains cool despite outside air temperature. The tree looks bush-like at first but slowly winds and curves its way up towards the sun, sometimes braiding itself within its own branches or with other trees. The trees' angle of limbs and trunk show their twisting path towards the rays of the sun. Disney is said to have been so impressed by the orange-colored forest of squatty trees that they inspired the forest scenes in "Bambi." Today the tree is thriving in the Lakes District. Its usually grows near water sources, whether river or lake. The trees enjoy having their home to themselves and tend to not grow well under the shadow of larger trees. When conditions warrant, the tree bears white flowers that turn into hard raisin-like seeds. The seed are sometimes sold at local art and craft fairs, giving you a chance to grow one at home.
