Dinosaur Sites - Museum Neuquén - Argentina

Three sites just outside of Neuquén offer visitors an opportunity to explore some of the largest dinosaur findings in the world. In Plaza Huincul (106 km west of Neuquén towards Zapala), the municipal museum Carmen Funes [Av. Córdoba 55, Plaza Huincul; Tel: (54 0299) 496-5486] attracts visitors with dinosaur eggs that are millions of years old and a replica skeleton of the world's largest dinosaur, the herbivore Argentinosaurus huinculensis, which was 35 m long.

The largest carnivorous dinosaur in the world is the Giganotosaurus carolinii, which was13m long and much bigger than the better-known Tyrannosaurs Rex. A full-sized replica of that dinosaur can be found at the municipal paleontological museum, Ernesto Bachmann [Civic Center, Villa El Chocón Tel: (54 0299) 4901230] in Villa El Chocón (80 km southwest of Neuquén). Ask staff members at the museum for directions to the area (3km away, near Lake Ezequiel Ramos Mexia) where you can observe 120 million year-old dinosaur footprints that are remarkably well-preserved.

A working anthropological excavation site welcomes visitors 95 km northwest of Neuquén at Centro Paleontológico Lago Barreales [Av. Megaraptor 1600, Ruta Provincial 51 km 65, Neuquén; Tel: (0299) 154 048614]. This site is the most difficult of the three to visit, and scientists are only excavating bones when water levels are low enough (generally during the fall and winter months).

The best way to get to any of these sites is with a car. You can rent one in Neuquén to visit each site, but arranging a trip with a tour is also possible. Relying on bus services will likely lead to frustration as they are very limited.
