Lago Traful

Villa Traful--Altitude: 979 meters/3,211 feet, Population: 503, Telephone Code: 02944

Located within Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi, much of the lake's beauty has been preserved due to development restrictions created by the federal government. Lago Traful is one of the purest lakes in the world, and many still consider its waters to be safe for drinking without any purification. The purity and size (70 km ²) of the lake attracts many fishers who believe the lake holds some of the best landlocked salmon in the world. In the Mapuche language, Traful means “union,” which refers to the confluence of the Traful and Limay rivers near the lake. Horseback riding, hiking, boating and windsurfing are all popular activities, though the main attraction here is the Mirador. Along the southeastern edge of the lake 5km east of Villa Traful, visitors will find Mirador Traful, a natural cliff that hangs 100 m above the lake and provides an excellent viewpoint of the area. Traful Peak is visible from here, and the clear glacial waters below reflect everything above the surface as if the lake were a mirror.

Near Lago Traful along Ruta 65, lies Villa Traful, a small and scattered community of 600 residents. The quaint community gets quite busy during peak summer months so lodging reservations are necessary. Near the pier downtown visitors will find the Park Ranger (guardaparque) station, a police station and a post office. There is a Banco de la Provincia de Neuquen ATM in the center of town. Visitors can take advantage of several free campgrounds in the area without services or pay a little for private campgrounds with services, or even a little more for one of the few hosterias.
