San Martín de Los Andes

Altitude: 645 meters/2,116 feet, Population: 26,000, Telephone Code: 02972

Set against a backdrop of the stunning Argentine Lake District, San Martín de los Andes has a picturesque location on the easterly shores of Lago Lácar and is surrounded by wooded hills. Like its westerly neighbor, Villa La Angostura, San Martín was created with forethought. The buildings are built with the same rustic, warm charm that characterizes villages in Switzerland. The streets and sidewalks are clean and well cared for; the grassy parks and sandy, public beaches are a welcoming place to enjoy the views with friends and mate.

The small village is located in the southeasterly corner of Neuquén province, and boasts roads lined with trees and small, locally-owned shops offering hand-made treasures, sweaters and chocolate. The municipality often hosts outdoor concerts, activities and shows; check with the tourist office for more information, at Rosas and Avenida San Martín..

Except for the summer months of mid-December, January and February and the Argentine winter holiday in mid-July, San Martín tends to not get overly swamped by tourists.

San Martín is an ideal spot for snow sports, since one of Argentina's principal winter sports center, Cerro Chapelco, is situated 20 kilometers (12 mi) southeast of the city. In August, do not miss its annual ski festival. In the summer, decent hiking, boat trips and fishing are available. The village is centrally located for great access to Parque Nacional Lanín and La Ruta de los Siete Lagos (Seven Lakes Route).

Founded in 1898, San Martìn de los Andes was first focused on forest exploitation activities. During the past few years though, the investments in the city turned to tourism, focusing especially on the construction of hotels.

The city thus offers a large choice of accommodations, from 2-stars hotels with views of the mountains (Colonos del Sur) to cabins for up to seven people (Cabañas Las Pampas) and hostels (Hostal del Lago).

For breakfast or lunch try little cafés such as El Cafecito on San Martìn, and for a dinner on the lakeside eat at Deli.
