Getting To and Away from Río Grande

Río Grande is on Argentina’s Ruta 3, 81 kilometers (48.6 mi, paved) southeast of the San Sebastián border crossing with Chile and 222 kilometers (133.2 mi, partially paved) north of Ushuaia. The city has several gas stations, auto mechanics and tire repair shops. CR Motos has motorcycle parts and repairs (Espora 969, Tel.: 43-4101). Four places have bicycle parts and repairs, including Everest (Estrada 526, Tel.: 43-4101) and Rueda a Rueda (Antártida Argentina 726, Tel.: 42-0751).

Four city bus routes run in the urban area ($0.60). Remises are shared taxis that run on fixed routes; fares depend on the destination. Taxis are the most expensive way to get around the city. Car rental agencies include Avis (Aeropuerto, Tel.: 1545-5001), Budget (San Martín 1095, Tel.: 42-7164) and Hertz (San Martín 236, Tel.: 42-6534; also at airport).

Río Grande’s bus terminal has a restaurant, Internet and bathrooms (Finocchio and Obligado). All bus companies have offices here and all buses depart from the terminal. Some also have offices in the city: Líder (P. Moreno 635, Tel.: 42-0003), Montiel (25 de Mayo 712, Tel.: 42-0997) and TecniAustral (Moyano 516, Tel.: 43-2885). There are more departures and destinations during the summer high season.
To Tolhuin / Ushuaia: 1.5 / 3 hours, $10 / $ 17 – Montiel (Monday-Saturday approximately every 2 hours 6 a.m. – 9 p.m., Sunday and holidays every 2 – 3 hours 9:30 a.m. – 9 p.m.), Líder (Monday – Saturday every 2-2.5 hours 6 a.m. – 8:30 p.m., Sunday and holidays 6 departures 8:30 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.).
To Río Gallegos: 8 hours, $34 – Tecni Austral (daily 8:30 a.m.), Marga / Taqsa (daily 8:15 a.m.).
For other destinations in Argentina, transfer at Río Gallegos.

To Punta Arenas, Chile: 8 hours, $33 – TecniAustral (Monday, Wednesday, Friday 8:30 a.m.), Pacheco (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday 10 a.m.).

Rio Grande’s airport is approximately five kilometers (3 mi) from town (Ruta Provincial 5, Tel.: 42-0699). Colectivo city bus Línea A passes by ($0.60). A remis costs $6.
Aerolíneas Argentinas (Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., 3 – 7 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m. – noon) – To Buenos Aires (daily, 3.25 hours, $142).
Lade (Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Lasserre 429, Tel.: 42-2968) – To Río Gallegos (Monday – Thursday, 50 minutes, $48), El Calafate (Thursday, $71), Mar de Plata (Thursday, $122), Bariloche (Thursday, $200), Comodoro Rivadavia (Monday – Thursday, $98).
Cedma (Monday – Friday 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., 3-7 p.m. 25 de Mayo 714, Tel.: 43-4364) – To Río Gallegos (Monday, Wednesday, Friday).
