RÃo Grande is in the midst of the Reserva para Aves Playeras Costa AtlÃ¡ntica de Tierra del Fuego, a major migratory bird reserve. In summer, the beaches in and near the city are a-flutter with thousands of birds visiting from as far away as the Arctic Circle. Near the city are dozens of estancias, former sheep ranches, which are now bed and breakfast lodges offering photographic safaris, fishing and other outdoor activities.
Small Tolhuin is a great place to strike out for hiking, or to take a boat across Lago Fagnano.
Any time of the year is good to go to Ushuaia, the Province's capital. In summer, boat to EstaciÃ³n Hamberstone, go fishing or hike during the long days. In winter, sport centers open, offering skiing, snowboarding, dog sledding and other snow activities. At any time of the year, cruise the Beagle Channel or take the Tren del Fin del Mundo to Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego.
Antartica is the last frontier for modern travelers. Only during the Austral summer can the icy continent be visited. A bevy of sea mammals and penguins await visitors lucky to be able to come this far south.
