Getting to and away from Ushuaia

Transportation schedules change with the season, with more service during the summer.

Bus

Ushuaia has a central bus station at Maipú and Fudal, across from the YPF gas station. However, only TecniAstral, Marga, Taqsa and short-distance buses leave from there. Individual ticket offices are in the downtown area:

To Tolhuin / Río Grande: 1.5 / 3.5 hours, $10 / $17. Líder (every 2 hours 6 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.), Montiel (every 2 hours 6 a.m. - 9 p.m.).

To Río Gallegos: Taqsa, TecniAustral (daily 5 a.m., 12 - 12.5 hours, $51).

To El Calafate: daily 5 a.m. with connection in Río Gallegos, 19 hours. Taqsa ($64).

To Punta Arenas / Puerto Natales, Chile: TecniAustral (Monday, Wednesday, Friday 5 a.m., 12 / 15 hours, $50 / $67; for Puerto Natales, change in Punta Arenas).


Buses to nearer destinations are provided by several companies, all departing from the bus depot on Maipú. Prices are round trip.

To Estación Tren del Fin del Mundo: 9 a.m., return 5 p.m., $8.50

To Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego: high season half-hourly 9 a.m.-3 p.m., last return 7 p.m.; low season hourly 9 a.m.-1 p.m., last return 5 p.m., $13. When the national park is free in the winter, bus fare is $14.

To Glaciar Martial: 10 a.m., return 4 p.m., $5.75.

To Lagos Escondido and Fagnano: 10 a.m., 2 p.m.; return 2 p.m., 6 p.m., $32

To ski centers: 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m.; return 2 p.m., 6 p.m., $11.50 Also to Estancia Harberton in high season.


Air

Aeropuerto Internacional Malvinas Argentinas is located approximately four kilometers (2.4 mi) from downtown. Among its services are ATMs and a tourist information desk. The airport tax is an additional $7.

Aerolíneas Argentinas (Monday - Friday 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m. - noon. Maipú and 9 de Julio, Tel.: 43-6338; airport: daily 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., 6:30 - 9:30 p.m., Tel.: 43-7265). To El Calafate (high season 3 - 4 daily, low season 1 daily, $107), Río Gallegos (1 daily, $62), Buenos Aires (high season 8 - 10 daily, low season 3 daily, $112-148). Also to Trelew in the high season.

To Río Grande (twice weekly, $21), Rio Gallegos (thrice weekly, $60), El Calafate (twice weekly, $104), Bariloche (1 weekly, $200), Comodoro Rivadavia (thrice weekly, $107), Mar de Plata (twice weekly, $124), Aeroparque Buenos Aires (twice weekly $144).

LanChile (airport: 42-4244). Rumbo Sur travel agency handles ticket sales in Ushuaia (Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-1 p.m., 5-8 p.m. San Martín 350, Tel.: 42-1139, E-mail: informes@rumbosur.com.ar). To Buenos Aires (high season daily, low season 4 weekly, $155 one way. Round trip is cheaper).


Boat

Ushuaia Boating in Ushuaia, Argentina, has regular service to Isla Navarino October - March or April. The first leg is a boat from Ushuaia to Puerto Navarino (40 minutes, immigration), then minibus to Puerto Williams (daily, one way $130, round trip $240) (in Ushuaia: Muelle Turístico, E-mail: ushuaiaboating@argentin.com). From Ushuaia, you can also check at the Muelle AFASyN and try to hitch a ride on a private yacht to Isla Navarino or the other South Atlantic Islands. Cruceros Australis (www.australis.com) has luxury Ushuaia – Cabo de Hornos – Punta Arenas cruises (October - March, three-night / four-day all inclusive, $1000). Its agent in Ushuaia is Tolkar (Roca 157, Tel.: 43-1408, E-mail: tolkarturismo@infovia.com.ar) Ushuaia is also the hopping-off point for trips to Antarctica. Agencies such as Turismo Ushuaia (Gobernador Paz 865, Tel.: 43-6003, E-mail: ushuaiaturismo@speedy.com.ar), have last-minute tickets, sometimes at a discount. Shop around.
