Although there are some 30-plus airports in Bolivia, it is unlikely you will fly into or out of any but El Alto International Airpot in La Paz (Airport code: LPB) or Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz (Airport code: VVI). Surprisingly, Viru Viru is the larger and more modern of the two, and it has more daily flights into and out of the country (though tickets are likely to be a bit more expensive). There are numerous flights every day which connect the two airports, which is just a 50 minute trip.
A couple of facts to note if you do plan to fly into or out of Bolivia: Domestic flights don’t require it, but when you are leaving Bolivia by plane, you will pay a mandatory departure tax ($24, payable in US dollars or Bolivianos). For international flights, it is essential to arrive at the airport two hours early; airlines are not flexible about check in and many have systems which shut down an hour before departure. Bolivia is serviced by the following international airlines: Aerosur, American Airlines, LAN, TACA, and Copa. It is recommended to call or check online 48 hours ahead of time to verify that your flight will be leaving when it is supposed to and that you have a seat on it.
