Wiring money in Bolivia is possible, but likely to be a hassle. First, internet and phone connection can be shoddy, so there’s no guarantee that the request can even be processed. In some of the more remote areas you can wait for days for the line to resume functioning. A second reason you wiring money should be a last resort in Bolivia, is that despite all the Western Union signs found in cities and towns across the country, there really aren’t that many active providers. If you are set it, however, make sure you’re in La Paz, Sucre, or another substantially sized and self-sufficent city. Finally, as in any country, fees to wire money (or even credit card cash advances) are costly. There is usually a charge for the sender and the receiver, so be prepared to pay. That being said, when you’re stuck, you’re stuck, and wiring is of course a viable option.
