Definitely one of the most picturesque sites in the park, the Cañon de Torotoro is situated a few hours walk from the village of Torotoro. It’s part of the network of large canyons throughout Parque Nacional Torotoro and is one of the few that is accessible to visitors. The canyon floor is surrounded by sheer rock faces 250 meters high, and there are miradors at the top with great views of the canyon and the area’s thorny scrub and birdlife.
As the canyon descends, you can see bird nests scattered among the different layers of rock on the cliffs – these belong to the highly endangered Red-fronted Macaw, which are endemic to the area.
Following the river along the base of the canyon for several hundred meters, you’ll reach the most spectacular falls in the area El Vergel, or waca sinq’a (cow’s nose in Quechua). The waterfalls tumble down for 10 meters from the canyon, surrounded by tropical ferns and moss. There are several crystal clear water pools here, where you can swim As well as beautiful walks through the canon, and swimming in the falls, it’s possible to do adventure sports such as rappelling and canonismo.
