Tarata, Cliza, Arani, Punata and surrounds

There are a number of tour companies that offer a circuit of these towns or you can just take public busses between the towns.  Of course, there are more to these towns than just cheap markets and discount rate crafts. Tarata is a beautiful colonial village, which has a number of beautiful structures including the Cathedral of Tarata. This beautiful building holds the remains of General Mariano Melgarejo – a colorful president of Bolivia in the late 19th

Cliza is well known for its carpet manufacturing and for the pichones, a traditional squib dish, with chicha, a traditional alcoholic beverage.   Arani is also known for its food, but in this case it is the Pan de Arani, a delicious bread for those who might be averse to pigeon. Aranai is also known for it clothing manufacturing and is home to the Cathedral of the Virgin Bella.  Punata is also known for its chicha, and for a number of impressive colonial buildings.

As you travel through the Upper Valleys keep your eyes open as you pass through the numerous smaller towns that dot the region.  They often offer up fantastic surprises, such as local foods, unique crafts and interesting attractions.
