On May 22, 1998 a magnitude 5.8 earthquake rocked the city of Totora. While much of the colonial architecture survived the destruction, many of the residences did not. Since then, there has not been much aid to support the reconstruction of the city. Only about 100 houses have been rebuilt. The population of the city has plummeted and basic services are still lacking. There is a cultural center and a beautiful church in the town, but little else. Totora is a fascinating study in how aid efforts have failed a town, but honestly offers little else.
