Cochabamba Services

Tourism Office

The brand new tourist information office (Tel: 4-466-2277), opened in May 2009, can be found on Plaza Colón, inside the entrance to the Alcaldia on the east side of the plaza. This modern space offers state of the art facilities, including an interactive guide to the city documenting hotels, restaurants, attractions and a local transport guide. There are also plans to open a WiFi zone with free internet access. It’s a good place to come and get orientated when you first arrive in the city. Open Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 2.30 – 7 p.m.

There are also a number of kiosks around town that can give you general information and provide maps of the city. These can be found at Pasaje Catedral (Calle Esteban Arce, right next to the Cathedral), Boulevar de la Recoleta, the Terminal de Buses and the airport.

Money

Most of the main banks have offices in the city centre, with many of them clustered around Calle Nathaniel Aguirre. Opening hours vary between 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, and most are also open on Saturday mornings. ATMs can be found here too and scattered around town. There are also plenty of bank office and ATMs on El Prado.

In the center, Banco Bisa (Calle Nataniel Aguirre 508, Tel: 4-425-2714) changes traveler’s checks without commission, BNB (Calle Nathaniel Aguirre E-0198, Tel: 4-415-3999) has moneygram and the casa de cambio de cambio Exprintbol (Plaza 14 de Septiembre, Tel: 4-425-4413) is a good place to change money and also has western union. There are street money changes on the corner of Calle Ayacucho and Calle Heroínas, in front of the post office.

Keeping in Touch

Post Office

The Correo can be found on the corner of Avenida de las Heroinas and Avenida Ayacucho (Monday – Saturday, 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.). Letters and small parcels can be sent from the main counter (a 2 kg packet costs $30 to the US, $40 to Europe). There’s a helpful information desk at the main entrance and there are stalls selling envelops and other materials all around the building.

For larger parcels, go to the international office, Encomiendas Internacionales (Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 2.30 p.m. – 18.20 p.m.) on pasaje Joaquin Zenteno Anaya. Leave the parcels unsealed so it can be checked (packets up to 3 kg cost $35.50 to the US, $50 to Europe, and approximately $7 per kg after that). You will need to wrap the package in brown paper – this can be bought at the office entrance.

Phone and Internet

There are phone shops all over the city will a lot of places offering special deals for international calls, especially along Calle Aroma. Internet cafes are just as common, Cybermania on the corner of Avenida Ayacucho and Avenida de los Heroínas has skype and is open until 11 p.m.

Laundry

There are a number of laundries dotted around the city. Jet’s Star (Calle Uruguay 448, between Calle 25 de Mayo and Avenida San Martin) does loads by the kg for $1.25 and can get your togs clean the same day if you bring them in the morning (Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. – 7 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.). They also have a bigger shop on Calle Cabrera near Avenida San Martin. Most of the bigger hotels also have laundry services and even the smaller ones can probably wash clothes for you in you ask.

Medical

There are chemists all over town, the FarmaCorp (Tel: 4-452-4244) on El Prado, near the corner of Calle La Paz is open 24-hours, and the Farmacia Cosmos on the main plaza is open Sunday mornings and all day the rest of the week. There’s a nurse here who can give injections.

Centro Médico Boliviano Belga (Calle Antezana N-0455, Tel: 4-422-9047) is a good place to go if you need to see a doctor. A more economical option is the ProSalud (Calle Melchor Pérez de Orguín between Capitán Ustariz and Blanco Galindo) who are good for diagnosing stomach problems. Los Olivos, in Recoleta, is the top clinic in town.
