Chaunaca to Maragua Crater - Trekking Cordillera de los Frailes - Bolivia

In the village of Chaunaca you can buy basic supplies and there’s lodging at Samay Huasi. You can also camp near-by, if you have permission. From here it’s a five hour trek to the community of Maragua in the Maragua Crater. Staying overnight here is pretty special – in the middle of a huge, silent crater under a sea of stars. There’s a hostel to stay in, owned by the local community. In Maragua you can view local weavings or head out to near-by waterfalls, including a 20 meter fall called La Garganta del Diablo. You can also trek to see the dinosaur prints at Niñu Mayu (10 kilometers there and back). Treks to the crater are normally done in two day trips from Sucre.

It’s possible to continue on to the edge of the crater and down to the community of Quila Quila, from where you can visit the rock paintings at Marca Rumi and the sacred Telapaqui hill, which has panoramic views of the crater and Sucre. There’s a pre-Hispanic track running from Quila Quila, which goes across the slopes of the hill, finishing in Cachimayu.

Longer three/four/five day treks can be arranged in Sucre with local guides. Ask at any of the tour agencies who specialize in treks to the Cordillera de los Frailes, or at the university tourism office for help with finding a guide.
