Casa Nacional de Moneda - Museum Potosí - Bolivia

While in Potosí it is unlikely you will miss the Casa Nacional de Moneda. The building itself is massive, taking up a whole city block, and the walls are thick enough to allow the building to serve as army headquarters (it has in the past). What’s more, if you stumble into the center courtyard, the 1865 mask of Bacchus will undoubtedly draw your attention… and creep you out. This National Mint-turn-museum is known as one of Potosí’s best offerings, a worthy visiting point for sure.

The building itself deserves a walk-around, built in 1753 and 1773. It is stone, and quite chilly, but one of Bolivia’s best. As a museum, the Casa Nacional de Moneda offers religious paintings, historic weaponry, ancient minting machinery and much more. Consider a guided tour, in English, French or Spanish (the most thorough) to see it all.
