Cultural centers - Other Activity Sucre - Bolivia

Sucre has a number of cultural centers that organize special cultural events, show movies, run language classes, and have music exhibitions and a range of other activities.

The Alliance Française (Calle Aniceto Arce 35, Tel: 4-645-3599), just down from the main plaza, shows foreign films, has live music performances and art exhibitions. They have a mediateca on site, which is open to the public, with a library of thousands of French books, newspapers, magazines, DVDs and CDs. There are regular language courses in French and Spanish, for all ages, and they also help organize performances in the local aire-libre theatre.

The Instituto Cultural Boliviano-Alemán (Calle Avaroa 326, Tel: 4-645-2091, www.icba-sucre.edu.bo )is a German organization focused on cultural exchange and understanding. The offer Spanish courses and have a library stocked with books, magazines and newspapers in German, English and Spanish. They can also organize home-stays with local families during your studies. The Kultur Café Berlin (Tel: 4-642-4521) is in the same building as the institute and has good value pizza, salads, sandwiches, main plates and daily specials. A number of cultural events organized by the institute, such as art exhibitions and dance shows, take place in the café. The institute currently organizes hourly yoga classes, taking place on Tuesday and Thursday at 8.30 a.m. and 7.45 p.m.

Centro Cultural Los Masis (Calle Bolívar 561, Tel: 4-645-3403) is a music centre that was established 40 years ago by Orureño Don Roberto. The main objective is to teach Andean music to children from the campo and educate them in the traditions of Pachamama, in a disciplined and focused environment. They practice in the courtyard every night between 7 and 8 p.m. and visitors are welcome to watch. Los Masis have performed in concerts all over the world and there is room exhibiting their collection of musical instruments from across Bolivia (including some very life-like armadillo shells – you have been warned!).
