El Castillo de la Glorieta - Historical Building Sucre - Bolivia

El Castillo de la Glorieta was built in the late 18th century for Prince Francisco Aggandoña. The Prince and his wife wanted their home to reflect the style of buildings in Europe at the time, so employed an Italian architect to design a castle with a mix of Dutch, Renaissance, Roman, Byzantine and Gothic style, among others. There are also two turrets, one which was for the Princess, one for the Prince. You are able to climb the Prince’s turret, designed like a minaret, when you visit the site.

As part of the tour of the castle, you will be shown around by a Spanish speaking guide who will explain the history of the building. You are not allowed to enter on your own. You can also have a wander around the grounds and visit the Natural History Museum next to the administration desk. Try and avoid coming at weekends when the place is full of school groups.

The Castle is named Glorieta after Princess Clotilde, who was given the title by the pope for her work with orphans.
