The building of this Sucre landmark began in 1551 but was not finally completed until 1712. It was built in a Renaissance style with Baroque and Neoclassical additions made over the years. There’s an impressive Greco-Roman alter at its head and a high-domed ceiling piped with gold leaf. The clock is from London and was installed in the late 18th century.
The easiest way to visit the cathedral is through the Cathedral Museum. Here you’ll find a display of religious artifacts including golden chalices, intricately embroidered vestments and crosses encrusted with gemstones. There is also a collection of paintings by European and local artists. It’s housed in the old chapel of San Juan de Mata.
The museum tour also includes a visit to the early 17th-century Capilla de la Virgin de Guadalupe. Inside is a beautiful canvas of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which was fortified by silver and gold leafing in the late 18th century. The painting is encrusted in precious gemstones; these have been donated by patrons over a period of hundreds of years and this tradition continues to the present day.
The museum is open Monday –Friday 10am-midday, 3pm-5pm, Saturday 10am-midday. Mass at the cathedral is held on Thursdays and Sundays at 9am. Mass at the Capilla de la Virgin Guadalupe is held daily at 8pm, 10.30am on Sundays.
