Circuito de Museos Municipales Calle Jaen - Museum La Paz - Bolivia

On the prettiest street in La Paz you’ll find a collection of the city’s most attractive museums, jointly known as the Circuito de Museos Municipales Calle Jaen. For an entrance fee of less than $0.60, the circuit includes four municipal museums displaying exhibitions on Bolivia’s history and customs. The museums are housed in beautiful white-washed colonial buildings with wooden balconies (a rarity in La Paz) and great views over the city.

The first museum after the entrance hall is the Museo Costumbrista ‘Juan de Vargas’(Tel: 2-228-0758). Here you’ll find photos, masks and descriptions of the origins of Carnival in La Paz; a exhibition on the Chola Paceña, including a collection of early 20th century photographs; and displays depicting the history and customs of the city. The Museo del Litoral is dedicated to the war of the pacific, with descriptions and photos related to the battle which cost Bolivia its coastline. There’s even a ‘sea room’ downstairs, as if to emphasize Bolivia’s attachment to its long-lost ocean.

The Museo de Metales Preciosos Precolombinos (Museo de Oro, Tel: 2-228-0329) houses an impressive collection of pre-Columbian gold artifacts from Inka, Tiwanaku, Chiripa and Wankarani cultures and ceramic, silver and bronze ornaments and tools. The Museo Casa de Pedro Domingo Murrillo (Tel: 2-228-0553) is the former house of General Murillo, a prominent figure in Bolivia’s fight for independence. A copy of Bolivia’s declaration of independence is displayed here, as well as a collection of mainly religious artwork and several rooms decorated in colonial style. The 18th century house itself has been beautifully restored. To enter the museums, walk to the top of Calle Jaen, take a left and the entrance to the museums is on your left, through the double wooden doors.
