The Center and El Prado

La Paz’s central zone contains the historic Plaza Murillo, with the Presidential palace and Cathedral, the city’s most attractive colonial street, Calle Jaén and the city’s economic hub. At its heart is El Prado, La Paz’s main thoroughfare, which stretches from Plaza del Estudiante up to Plaza San Francisco. Here you’ll find an eclectic mix of glass-fronted offices, old Colonial buildings and ad-hoc market stalls, it’s a great place to get a feel for the social diversity of the city – from shoeshine boys in ski masks to office workers in power suits.

Most of the city’s museums are found is this area, as well as a good helping of hotels, restaurants and people watching. On Sunday mornings, the Prado is shut off and takes on the feel of a summer fete – it fills with people, there are stalls and entertainment and a great atmosphere.
