Hostal República

A great mid-range option centrally located only three blocks from La Paz’s Plaza Murillo, Hostal Republica offers a range of rooms (singles, twins, doubles, triples and quadruples) with private or shared bathroom options. Rates range from $10 US per night for a single with shared bathroom to 44 US $ per night for a quadruple with private bathroom. Payment is accepted in cash dollars, euros or bolivianos, or credit cards.

Rooms at Hostal Republica are spacious and clean and are situated around two attractive courtyards where guests can relax when the sun is out (there are tables and chairs). The staff members on reception are courteous and helpful and are more than willing to give guests travel and tourism advice, arranging tours for them if necessary.

Breakfast is not included in the price of the rooms, but there is a pleasant café on site serving a range of inexpensive breakfasts, alongside snacks and more substantial meals which are also available on room service. There’s a communal computer with internet access for guests to use free of charge in the café and guests with laptops can also get a wi-fi access.

Set around two sunny, cobblestone courtyards in an old colonial building, Hostal República offers peace and quiet just a few blocks from Plaza Murrillo.

The house has an interesting history – an ex-Bolivian president lived here in the early 20th century. The rooms are worn, but they’re a decent size and there are some nice touches like supplying you with shampoo. There’s also a garden at the back, a travel agency and WiFi. The café at the front serves good breakfasts (not included in the price). There have been reports of an erratic hot water supply in the communal bathrooms.
