Hostal Colonial Del Lago

This large hostel on the corner of Avenida 6 de Agosto and Avenida 16 de Julio seems to attract and accommodate a large proportion of the backpacking crowd who come to Copacabana to visit the Islas Del Sol and De La Luna. Prices are low (30 bolivianos, or 4 US $ approx., per person per night for a bed in a room with shared bathroom) and include breakfast. However, there seems to be much better quality accommodation in the budget price bracket around. Rooms seemed shabby and grimy when Viva visited (although the beds were firm and comfortable) and the promised ‘hot-water’ showers weren’t even lukewarm. The breakfast, although adequate (bread, jam, coffee and juice), wasn’t particularly exciting either.

Hostal Colonial Del Lago’s one redeeming factor may be its pleasant and spacious courtyard bar and restaurant, which is a great place for guests to relax and read or write postcards when the sun is out. On the whole, though, this hostel seems to be cutting corners, or perhaps resting on former glories.
