Economy & Politics

By Ricardo Segreda

If you chose to visit Copacabana, Bolivia, cash up before you arrive; accessing ready money is a tricky matter in this city, despite tourism being this city’s main business. Bolivia being one of the poorest countries in Latin America, the city does not have the resources to safeguard ATM’s, so consequently there aren’t any. There is only one bank in town, PRODEM, on the 6 of Agosto  (between Bolivar and Pando), and the tellers will arrange withdrawals for you, but only during bank hours, and if you arrive with no cash on a bank holiday, you have no choice but to return to Puno in Peru, or continue south to La Paz. Also: many businesses will exchange Bolivianos for the Peruvian sole or the American dollar (the current exchange rate is eight Bolivianos per dollar) -- at usurious fees -- but most Copacabana business owners will accept Peruvian or American currency.  There are few that will take credit cards, however.
