Restaurant Vegetariano Kala Uta

Don’t be fooled into thinking that this restaurant is exclusively vegetarian – it seems it may have just adopted this name to attract more of the slightly hippyish backpacking crowd who flock to Copacabana to visit the mystical islands on Lake Titicaca. Meat and fish do feature in many of the dishes available at Restaurant Vegetariano Kala Uta. However, strict vegetarians, and even vegans, would be able to eat well here provided they were content to go for some of the plainer options.

Set meal ‘menus’ featuring a soup, main course, and sometimes also a dessert are available day and night for as little as 15 bolivianos (2 US $ approx.). However, some of the ‘a la carte’ choices are a bit more exciting. Trout, in particular, is a local speciality, and the spaghetti with trout in cream sauce (30 bolivianos, or 4 US $ approx.) that Viva sampled during a recent visit was substantial, satisfying and delicious.

Beers, wines and cocktails are available at reasonable prices, as are juices, soft drinks and coffees. Restaurant Vegetariano Kala Uta has outdoor seating for daytime diners seeking some sun. In the chillier evenings though, the restaurant’s colourful candlelit interior may seem more warm and welcoming though.
