The border town of Desaguadero is situated south of Lake Titicaca, about 55 kilometers west of Tiahuanaco, and is an easy access route to Peru. There are trufi collective taxis ($3 per person) that leave when full from Calle J.M. Asin and Calle Eyzaguirre in the cemetery district of La Paz and take roughly 2.5 hours to make the 113 kilometer journey. There are also regular buses, which are cheaper but take longer.

Border formalities are pretty standard – get your exit stamp (Bolivian immigration may close for lunch so it’s best to avoid this time), cross the border on foot, then go through Peruvian immigration. There are moneychangers on the Peruvian side of Desaguadero, and buses onward to Puno and other destinations.

If you need to stay on the Bolivian side there are plenty of hotels near the border, offering rooms for around $2 to $4.50 per person. You’ll also find a number of food stalls and restaurants serving local fare. There’s a lively market here a couple of times a week, which provides a welcome distraction. Peruvian Desaguadero also has accommodation and food options.

Other places nearby Desaguadero: Achacachi, Huarina, Puerto Acosta, Estrecho de Tiquina, Puerto Perez, Huatajata and Escoma.
