
There are a number of camp options in the northern part of Parque Nacional Amboró, all of which are run by local communities. You can go with a tour agent, or contact the communities directly. Transport can usually be arranged to pick you up from Buena Vista. Keep in mind that you are not allowed to enter the park without a guide. The Amboró Information Center in Buena Vista (Tel: 3-932-20-55) is a good introduction to the park, but it is only open by appointment.
Refugio Ecológico La Chonta – One of the most popular camps in the northern part of the park, La Chonta is a good option for bird watching. There are also a number of trails around the camp, including a two day hike to RÃo Sagmayo, where you can swim. The community of Carbones offer forest trips, tours of a dairy farm handicraft classes and food services. There are cabañes and camping. It’s situated 32 kilometres from Buena Vista. It’s a great spot for hiking, with trails that take to waterfalls and natural swimming holes, to miradors with stunning views and to caves where the extremely rare oilbirds reside. Villa Amboró community can organize transportation with horses, activities and guides. There are cabins here and you can camp. It’s 39 km from Buenavista. Other choices in the northern part of the park include Laguna Verde, which is situated 150 meters from the RÃo Mataracu and near waterfalls, swimming holes and a green water lake (44 km from Buena Vista in community Oriente Chichas, Tel: 3-934-7337, Cel: 7169-5905); Mataracú Tent Camp, which is ran by the Amboró Eco Resort, has comfortable accommodation and dinosaur fossils in the area (43 km from Buena Vista, Tel: 3-932-2048); and Cajones de Ichilo and El Cóndor, in the northern tip of the park in pristine rainforest, the habitat of the highly endangered Horned Curassow, which has trails to the RÃo Ichilo, caves which house oilbirds and to stunning look-out points (47 km west of YapacanÃ, Cajones de Ichilo Cel: 7630-2581, El Cóndor, Tel: 3-932-6930)
