El Fuerte is situated about 10 kilometers from Samaipata, just off the road to Santa Cruz on the top of a hill. It’s possible to walk to the site, or get a taxi from the center. You can buy entry tickets from the museum in town, or at the site itself. From the entrance you follow a trail that first leads you to two miradors overlooking the site.
At the great red sandstone rock you’ll see a number of interesting sites and carvings including niches in the southern side that identify where a series of temples used to be, and the arrangement of carved seating at the rocks highest point, called the Coro de los Sacerdotes (Choir of the Priests). There are then a number of trails that lead you around Inca buildings and other interesting sites. You’ll need a couple of hours to enjoy the whole site at leisure.
Open: 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. Entry: $7
