It the centre of town you’ll find the delightful Plaza 31 de Julio, filled with Cuban palms, mahogany, Spanish-cedar and the wonderful toborochi trees with their bulging, spiky trunks and colorful blooms. Some of the trees have name tags (in Spanish) if you fancy introducing yourself. The plaza doubles as a tranquil daytime lounge spot, perfect for people watching and soaking up a few rays; and a buzzing social hot spot by night, especially on Sundays when the town’s youth puts their glad rags on and head for the plaza.
There’s an interesting statue at the plaza’s head, which symbolizes the town’s history and culture, if you can mange to look past the concrete block that is.
