The beautiful stone church complex on the main plaza is the main attraction in town. There’s also a small church museum and the Museo Ayoreo-Chiquitano, about the two local indigenous groups. A few kilometers out of town you can find the Parque Nacional Histórico Santa Cruz la Vieja, and there are also a couple of balnearios easily reached from the town centre where you can have a swim and relax in nature. There are lots of cave paintings in the area, ask a local to point you in the right direction, and some stunning views from the top of Cerro Turubó, a hill on the road to Puerto Suarez. San José de Chiquitos is also the gateway to one of Bolivia’s most undiscovered park, Parque Nacional Kaa-lya del Gran Chaco, although it’s difficult to organise trips to the park in San José.
