General Safety Precautions

While visiting Santa Cruz, take measures in crowded areas to protect your belongings, as pickpocketing is quite common. Travelers should also try to avoid sparsely populated neighborhoods and be sure not to walk alone at night, as violent muggings do occur. What's more, Santa Cruz has recently been the site for a number of protests—sometimes violent—by the local coca farmers, who grow increasingly frustrated with the restrictions on their crop. If you happen upon a demonstration, it's best to keep your distance.

Health Risks

Medical experts recommend that travelers visiting areas east of the Andes get the yellow fever vaccination. Malaria is also quite common in the areas around Santa Cruz, so it would be wise to take preventative medication. Insect-borne diseases are a serious threat, making repellent a must in tropical areas. In early 2009, the country experienced one of its largest outbreaks of dengue fever ever, with nearly 55,000 cases and 25 deaths in a matter of months; don't skip out on repellant and wear long pants and long sleeves to protect yourself.
