When to Go

Santa Cruz and Around

The climate in and around Santa Cruz is tropical, with predominately warm temperatures throughout the year. During the summer (October April), the weather is particularly hot, humid and rainy. December and January are arguably the hottest months. You'll find that the air is drier and therefore much more comfortable during the rest of the year (May – September). Be aware, however, that August is “slash and burn” month in Bolivia, when farmers burn forests to clear the land. As a result, strong winds carrying thick smoke plague Santa Cruz; the smoke may affect visibility and cause minor respiratory problems. Travelers should also be wary of surazos, cold southern winds from Argentina that tend to cause sudden, and extreme drops in temperature—though temps rarely drop below freezing. Surazos are most common between May and July.

The Rainforest

Surprising no one, the rainforests are humid and wet year-round, with typical highs around 30° C (85° F). Rains can be extremely heavy with hail and lightening.

The Gran Chaco

The Chaco region has a climate of its own. From January through March conditions are hot and damp. During the rest of the year, the days are very hot and the nights are quite frigid. Daytime temperatures generally range from 20° C – 30° C (75° F – 85° F), but there have been highs recorded as hot as 46º C (115º F). That said, nighttime temperatures can fall below freezing.
