In a town arguably void of sights, Plaza 24 de Septiembre, located in the center of Santa Cruz, is your best choice for sightseeing. A market graces the center of the square, and benches line the outer rim, providing ample opportunities for shopping, people watching or reading a book. If that’s not your cup of tea, the square is a good starting out point from which to explore. Facing the plaza is the Basilica Menor de San Lorezo cathedral, an impressive church well worth checking out. Manzano Uno, located next to the cathedral, exhibits art by local artists, and La Casa de la Cultura, also on the main square, has permanent exhibitions of paintings and sculptures. Before leaving the plaza, be sure to look up--you might spot sloths whiling away the day atop the branches of one of the square’s many trees.
