Getting Around

Santa Cruz is the not the easiest city to get around if you don’t have your own transport. The city is set out in concentric rings, with large ring roads dividing each ring or anillo. The city center is found in the first ring, or primero anillo, and most places you will want to visit will be within the first four rings.

Within the city center, you can walk between most places, though from north to south the first ring takes up about 16 blocks. If you want to use public transport, the city’s buses ($0.30) get very crowded, but run all over the city between and around the anillos. Ask a local to send you in the right direction. There are also trufis ($0.20) that run round and round the main ring roads, which can be very useful.

The easiest way to get around the city through is by taxi. Within the first ring, the charge is around $1, slightly more if there’s a few of you. From there it’s about $0.20-0.30 per ring. For example, from the center to terminal normally costs $1.50. It will cost more to go further afield, though, outside of the fourth ring for example.
