Getting To and Away - San Ignacio de Velasco

San Ignacio is the main transport hub in the Chiquitania and so has buses heading for most destinations in the region. There is no central bus station so you will have to visit the office of each bus company to purchase tickets - a number of them can be found near the Mercado de Comidas. Be warned though, the location of the bus companies’ offices change with annoying regulatory, so it might be worth going to the Tourist Information Office first to check the addresses. Buy tickets at least a day in advance to secure a seat.
Keep in mind that the town is only accessible by dirt road, so it might take longer to get here in the rainy season.
Buses to Santa Cruz (and towns on route) generally leave in the evening between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Copacabana Transical B (Calle Velasco between Calle Cochabamba and Calle Chiquitos), Terrestre Jenecherú (Calle Eduardo Zilker on the corner of Avenída Custodio Middagh), Trans Gusmar (Calle Eduardo Zilker on the corner of Calle Libertad) and San Matía (Calle Eduardo Zilker between Calle Junin and Calle 24 de Septiembre) are recommended. Transporte 31 del Este (Calle Junin between Calle Cochabamba and Calle Chiquitos) has a service that leaves in the morning, at 11 a.m. Journey time is around 10 hours and prices are between $8.50 and $17.
Terrestre Jenecherú has a service to San Rafael via San Miguel leaving daily at 7 p.m., Pionera Trans Bolivia (Calle 24 de Septiembre between Calle Cochabamba and Calle Chiquitos) leaves for San Rafael daily at 6 a.m. and 1 p.m. and 31 del Este departs for San Miguel at 3 p.m. every day. Expreso San Ignacio (Calle Comercio between Calle Cochabamba and Calle Chiquitos) goes to Santa Ana every morning at 7 a.m.
For San José, Universal (Calle Junin near corner of Avenida Kennedy) and Expreso San Ignacio leave on consecutive days at 2 p.m. and 1.30 pm.
There are buses that leave every morning for San Matias (Trans Carretón, Calle Chiquitos near corner of Calle Murrillo; Trans Velasco, Calle 24 de Septiembre between Calle Cochabamba and Calle Chiquitos; and Pionear Trans Bolivia). There are also a few morning services to Piso Firme, Campamento and Florida in and around Noel Kempff National Park.
