Caranavi serves as a transport hub linking the northern Yungas with La Paz, which is located about four hours away on the newly-paved Yungas road. The bus terminal in Caranavi, where all public and private transport will let you off, is more or less an indoor strip of bus company counters. The station is down the road from the city center, but there are restaurants, phone call centers and small shops surrounding it.
Vagonetas, flotas and minivans depart from the terminal and serve the surrounding areas and La Paz.
TransBolivia (La Paz Office: 591-2-221-0469 / Guanay Office: 591-2-213-6307) and Tran Totai (La Paz Office: 591-2-221-0392 / Caranavi Office: 591-2-832-2119) run throughout the week to Guanay, Mapiri, Yucumo, Rurre, Ixiamas, S. Borja, San Antonio, and Cocochi.
To La Paz, buses in Caranavi run up to 5 times daily and from La Paz you can get a taxi ($6 / 40 Bs.) or a minibus ($3 / 20 Bs.) from the Villa Fatima neighborhood, an area in north La Paz lined with open-faced tiendas and buses running to the north and south Yungas.
