Chulumani

The delightful village of Chulumani is the capital of the south Yungas district, and is a laidback market community. Situated on a hill overlooking the subtropical surroundings, this scenic setting is still somewhat off the beaten track when it comes to tourism, and peace and tranquility awaits those that do make the effort. A four-hour bus journey from La Paz, Chulumani is an important farming center, and is surrounded by coca plantations, as well as banana, oranges and cacao.

Chulumani, and the villages that surround it, have an interesting history, as many residents in the area are descendents of African slaves brought to Bolivia to work in the silver mines in Potosí. They were then moved to the Yungas region to labor on coca plantations, where they were forced to work by landowners right up until the 1952 revolution. Today, there are estimated to be around 30,000 Afro-Bolivians living in the Yungas, of which Chicaloma is the biggest community. Check out their village festival in July to see the Saya music and dance, which has its origins from the Congo and Angola.

There are over 350 communities in the hills surrounding Chulumani, many of which are in old colonial settlements and make an interesting visit. This beautiful countryside is full of bird life and butterflies, and is best explored by foot. Curiously, the area was a hideout for Nazi fugitives in the 1950s, and you can trek to the old house of Klaus Barber, the butcher of Lyon. One of the area’s biggest highlights is the Apa Apa nature reserve, a unspoiled pocket of forest among numerous plantations. You can stay over at the reserve, or camp. Other hotel options are mainly in walking distance of the center, where you’ll find most of the village amenities and restaurants.
