Illampu Circuit - Hiking Sorata - Bolivia

This challenging trek starts in Sorata and then circuits the Illampu Ancohuma massif, returning back to the Yungas village in approximately seven days. You’ll need to be well acclimatized to do this trek – there are three passes over 4,000 meters and one over 5,000 meters and you ascend more than 2,000 meters in the first two days. It has stunning views of the surrounding mountains and takes you over parts of the Cordillera that few visitors see. The Asociación de Guías Turísticas y Porteadores in Sorata offer this trek, as do a number of operators in La Paz. There are many variations of the hike, but here is one version.

On the first day, you will walk up to the village of Lakatia at the foot of Mount Illampu and camp at 4,200 meters near the village. The six to seven hours trekking the following day will take you over the Illampu Pass at 4,800 meters, from where you will have stunning views of Mount Illampu and Mount Ancohuma, as well as across Lake Titicaca. The camp site is usually at the grasslands of Utaña Pampa on the Río Ancohuma.

On the third day the trail takes you over the Korahuasi Pass (4,500 meters). The descent down gives you great views of the Cocoyo plain. The next day brings with it the Paso Sarani (4,600 meters) and the opportunity to see condors flying high in the valley. The trail then continues down to the Río Chajolpaya, with plenty of sites where you can camp along the way. The fifth day involves a seven hour walk to the Laguna San Francisco, over the Paso Calzada (5,050 meters) and past several small lakes, including the Laguna Chojña Khota.

Day six is an eight hour trek down to the Susana Mines, a gold mining settlement, with beautiful views of Lake Titicaca. The final day involves an eight hour trek back to Sorata, through eucalyptus trees, greenery and villages, until you reach Sorata at 2,680 meters.
