Trans-Cordillera Trek - Hiking Sorata - Bolivia

This trek is one of them most challenging in Bolivia, covering over 160 kilometers and 20 passes over 4,000 meters, traversing the entire Cordillera Real. You will experience the full range of scenery in the area, from sub-tropical forests to high alpine valleys, past Aymara villages to snow-capped mountains. Some of the vistas you will see are truly breathtaking.

It starts in Sorata, heads along the seldom visited eastern side of the range, through the Zongo Valley, past Mount Huayna Potosí, to La Cumbre, onto Mina San Francisco on the Takesi trek, and down until its final end at Mount Illimani. There are not many places to buy supplies on route, so you will have to carry everything with you from the start.

The whole trek takes about three weeks, but it’s possible to do a shortened version of the trek, for example, the first 10 days from Sorata to the Zongo Valley, or even join the trek when it passes near a road. In fact, the Trans-Cordillera is made up of a number of shorter of treks - the first four days are the same as the Illampu Circuit and there are several other three/four day treks covered in the route.
